About this project

Opened to the public in 1974, the Smithsonian’s iconic Hirshhorn Museum designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill (SOM) in 1969, will undergo the largest revitalization to its building in its 50-year history by SOM |Selldorf Architects. This will include upgrades to the modern and contemporary art museum’s infrastructure and the expansion of space for exhibits, programming and large audiences.

The Building Logistics Consulting Group of Lerch Bates is assisting with these efforts. We will be examining ways to improve the efficiency and ease of moving materials – particularly large artworks – in and out of the building, all while preserving the spirit of Bunshaft’s vision for a national museum of modern art on the National Mall.
