The New York Architects’ Regatta Challenge (NYARC) is more than just a sailing competition; it’s a celebration of community, camaraderie, and the unique intersection of architecture and maritime culture. Held annually from the picturesque waterways surrounding Manhattan, this event brings together architects, designers and sailing enthusiasts for a day of friendly competition and networking. Lerch Bates joined the fun again this year, ramping up its support of the event with the first-ever Lerch Bates sailing team, led by Erik Walther, senior market development consultant.

Founded in the early 1990s, the regatta was born from a simple idea: to foster community among architects in a fun and engaging way, and raise funds for important nonprofits from all over New York. This year, the event raised more than $150,000 for local philanthropies working in a diverse range of areas of need, from water cleanliness to child literacy. Over the years, the Regatta has grown into a prominent event on the architectural calendar, attracting participants from various firms and disciplines. The event not only highlights the talents of architects but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collaboration, both on and off the water.

This year’s event was hindered by low winds, but teams set sail nonetheless. Boats in two classes, J-24 and J-80, competed in a series of races in an attempt to secure the coveted title of regatta champion. Lerch Bates finished 6th in the J-24 class, a worthy performance for its first year sailing as Team LB.

Congratulations to Fish & Ships, who defended their 2023 J-24 Class Regatta Champion title!

Architects are known for their creativity and problem-solving skills, which they put to the test on the water for the NY Architects’ Regatta every year. The races are not just about speed but also about strategy, teamwork, and, of course, a bit of good-natured rivalry.

“The New York Architects’ Regatta is a vibrant blend of architecture and sailing that encapsulates the spirit of creativity and collaboration in the design community,” said Eric Rupe, CEO of Lerch Bates at the award ceremony. “Congrats to all the participants and THANK YOU to all the philanthropies involved for carrying out your impactful work – that’s the real reason we’re all here today, committed to the success of the NY Architects’ Regatta.”
