Multipurpose Complex is One of the Largest Projects in Russian Federation
Lerch Bates, an international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and materials management, has been selected by MANICA Architecture to provide vertical transportation and façade access consulting services for the construction of VTB Stadium and Arena in Moscow, Russia. The massive project will include the construction of a stadium and an indoor arena within a single building enclosure.
VTB Stadium and Arena, one of the largest projects currently being developed in the Russian Federation, features the redevelopment of historic Dynamo Stadium and the surrounding park. The exterior façade of the old stadium will be incorporated into the construction of the $700 to $750 million sports and entertainment complex. A honeycomb patterned skin will envelop the 27,000-seat soccer stadium, featuring an oculus over the playing field, and the 11,500-seat multipurpose arena. The groundbreaking design of the two ultramodern sports facilities will allow them to operate independently as well as simultaneously and is expected to be a catalyst for all sports in Russia.
VTB Stadium and Arena will be the home of Football Club Dynamo Moscow when it is expected to open in 2017. Founded in 1923 and the oldest soccer team in Russia, FC Dynamo Moscow currently plays in the Russian Premier League. The VTB Stadium and Arena development also will feature the construction of other structures on its grounds including a world-class sports academy, professional and amateur training facilities, apartments, office space and a luxury hotel.
“VTB Stadium and Arena will have a tremendous impact on how sports and entertainment venues will be designed and constructed,” said Jeff Marsh, Lerch Bates’ director of business development. “The innovative venue, while honoring the past, will be the keystone for the future development of sports in the Russian Federation and Lerch Bates is privileged to be a part of such a significant project.”
Founded in 1947, Lerch Bates is the oldest and largest vertical transportation consulting firm in the world and has built a reputation as the premier designer of façade access systems, permanent equipment and rigs utilized for servicing exterior façades including window washing and maintenance. The firm has consulted on the elevator and façade access systems of many of the world’s tallest buildings including the 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 1,667-foot Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan, 1,476-foot Nanjing Greenland Financial Center in Nanjing, China and 1,389-foot Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago, Illinois.
Dynamo Stadium, opened in 1928 and the home of FC Dynamo Moscow until it closed in 2008, was designed by architects Aleksandr Langman and Leonid Cherikover and constructed at Petrovsky Park in Moscow. The site has a rich history dating back to the 1770s when Catherine the Great ordered the construction of Petrovsky Palace so it could serve as the final overnight stop for nobles traveling from St. Petersburg to Moscow. VTB Stadium and Area will preserve the perimeter façade of Dynamo Stadium as the two new sports facilities will be constructed within the ring of the historic building. The existing park surrounding Dynamo Stadium will be preserved as public green space.
David Manica of MANICA Architecture is supervising the construction of VTB Stadium and Arena. The firm’s current and recent projects include Lusail Iconic Stadium (FIFA World Cup 2022, Doha, Qatar), Guangzhou International Arena and Entertainment District (Guangzhou, China), Mercedes-Benz Arena (Shanghai, China), as well as design consulting for the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Inter Milan Football Club (Milan, Italy). Prior to establishing his own design studio, Manica worked for thirteen years as a senior project designer at HOK Sport Venue Event, renamed Populous, where he was responsible for leading the design of over $5 billion in construction worldwide. His arena and stadium design experience includes lead design positions on some of the largest and most recognized facilities in the world including Toyota Center, Reliant Stadium, O2 Arena London, Beijing Olympic Arena and the new Wembley Stadium in London, England.
VTB Stadium and Arena will be jointly owned by FC Dynamo Moscow and VTB Bank, one of the leading universal banks in the Russian Federation and the majority stakeholder of the team.
