Lerch Bates Joins Expansion Project at Denver International Airport

South Terminal Redevelopment Program to
Complete Original Vision of Airport


Lerch Bates, an international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and materials management headquartered in metropolitan Denver, will provide elevator, escalator and façade access consulting on the South Terminal Redevelopment Program at Denver International Airport.

The $500 million project, with construction to be completed in 2015, will feature a 519-key hotel and conference center and will reinvent the way the nation’s fifth busiest airport connects with the Mile High City. Global architecture, design, planning and consulting firm Gensler is the lead architect on the project.

Lerch Bates is the oldest and largest vertical transportation consulting firm in the world. Throughout its 65-year history, the firm has set the international standard for elevator consulting and has a reputation as a worldwide leader in advising on façade access.  As architects continue to push the limits of design, developers are striving to maximize the available interior space of the buildings.  It provides unique challenges for vertical transportation and Lerch Bates is a member of the architectural design teams working on many of today’s newest buildings. The South Terminal Redevelopment Program will include the construction of 18 elevators and 18 escalators.

The façade access consultants of Lerch Bates continually make benchmarks in innovation when designing exterior building maintenance equipment systems. The systems enable the firm’s clients to safely access all exterior facades of their buildings for window cleaning and exterior maintenance. Lerch Bates has designed façade access systems for exceptional buildings around the world including the 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs including 600 to 700 construction and design jobs and more than 200 hotel jobs, the modern 21st Century design of the new Westin hotel and conference center, outdoor public plaza and train station will complement the existing Jeppesen Terminal. The 22.8-mile Regional Transportation District (RTD) East Rail Line, currently under construction, will connect the new commuter rail station with downtown Denver. DIA reports that there are 186 firms working on the South Terminal Redevelopment Program with 88% of them locally owned. Construction of the project began in the fall of 2011. The 519-key Westin is expected to open for business and 2015 and the new commuter rail station is slated to open in 2016.

DIA is one of the busiest airline hubs in the world with more than 50 million passengers traveling through it annually. The airport reported last month that it broke its all-time passenger traffic record in 2012 with more than 53 million travelers. The record-breaking year is a 0.6 increase over the previous record of 52,849,132 passengers traveling thought the airport in 2011.
